SURFING ON MOUNTAINS & CREATING PRODUCTS IN HARMONY WITH NATURE

We’ve finally reached a point where settling for a mere reduction in negative environmental impact is a thing of the past. Now, we can actually create 100% fossil-free bio-tech industrial design products, and Papersurf stands as the first proof of concept.

Papersurf is a pow surfboard and a freestyle ride for snowy mountains without bindings. This awaited benchmark in sustainable design is from a collaboration between the board rider and photographer Vincent Skoglund (founder of Papersurf), the team behind the groundbreaking material PaperShell, and us—the designers at Nine Point Circle.

THE DESIGN

9PC’s design agency mission is to redefine possibilities across product categories, utilizing new materials, technology, and production methods to drive innovation. The strength in the design of Papersurf lies in the combination of a deep understanding of mechanics, the industrial process, and the ultimate user (or rider) experience. The project aims to push boundaries and combine the low weight, flexibility, and strength of PaperShell’s bio-composite with the curves, edges, shapes, and dynamics of riding on snow.

”I hope to inspire the entire design and product creation community to abandon materials that depend on high emissions of fossil CO2 and hazardous chemicals. With Papershell, there are no more excuses!” says Marcus von Euler, Co-founder & Creative Ronin at Nine Point Circle.

THE VISION

Vincent Skoglund, Founder of Papersurf, explains the idea: ”This board represents a new way of experiencing our mountains. It lands right between surfing and snowboarding. Besides the obvious fun side of it, I believe in accelerating carbon independence through innovative action. To make something most people think is impossible, a snow surf out of paper, to facilitate life and play,” he says.

THE PAPERSHELL MATERIAL

PaperShell is a new 100% fossil-free material utilizing waste streams from the agricultural and forest industry to re-engineer wood into 100% bio composites. From a design perspective, we instantly saw the potential in the material we had been searching for so long. PaperShell is similar to glass fiber and could outperform plastics, and even metal, in many products. On both a product and system level, this material could scale for industrial positive impact—the faster and bigger, the better!

”PaperShell is founded on pushing the boundaries and mixing art, science, and capital towards nature. People, planet, profit with pleasure. A Papersurf? Well, it speaks for itself!” says Anders Breitholtz, CEO at PaperShell.

From 9PC, we aim to push innovations and creativity towards a future where it’s fun being human in perfect harmony with a thriving planet. Our long search for the material from which we can create the first high performance 100% bio-based industrial design product that is part of nature has finally yielded results.

  • Today the first produced batch has sold out home made movies of riders surfing mountains and having fun with Papershell is proof of successful launch. The board has is currently displayed at the Stockholm museum of technology as an example of high tech use of bio material from the Forrest. Expect news coming fall 2024.
